Many activities and services of this Centre are developed in accordance with the sustainable development goals (SDG), one of which is the “Fitness x Mentorship” Scheme under the Lean Poverty Alleviation Initiative. The scheme has achieved SDG 1 “No Poverty”, SDG 3 “Good Health and Well-Being”, SDG 10 “Reduced Inequalities”, SDG 16 “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” and SDG 17 “Partnerships for the Goals”. It adopts an innovative approach to associate “exercising” with “volunteering” in order to not only allow students to develop regular exercise habit but also foster their serving hearts and understanding of the community. Participants of the scheme will be trained with basic skills of a sports item and given chances to partner various members of the community in pursuing sports. They are expected to build up healthy lifestyle while experiencing diversity and inclusion.
In last academic year, the “Fitness x Mentorship” Scheme was maintained active despite the epidemic. Following the four sports items cum services held in the first term, there were two others for the second term, namely “Dodgebee x People with Hearing Impairment” and “Soft Darts x People with Intellectual Disabilities”. Regarding dodgebee, the participating students attended an experiential workshop to understand the daily challenges encountered by the hearing impaired and to learn lip reading, prior to acquiring the skills of dodgebee and playing friendly match with their partners from The Hong Kong Society for the Deaf. As for soft darts, students paired up with the residents of the TWGHs Lee Yen & Lee Yuk Lun, BBS, JP, Father & Son Lohas Villa to receive training and join hands to complete the challenging tasks. Apart from learning the skills of the sports items, students had grasped the opportunity to exchange with their partners to enhance mutual understanding.
